With working in the mental health field for 10+ years, I have not only found ways to help patients but also the chance to guide families during a difficult time. This has been an opportunity that I am grateful for. More times than not I am unfortunately recognizing that the average person has no idea what is out there to help support themselves and/or family members. Trying to navigate the mental health field can be daunting even for someone that is not struggling at the time. Allow me to be that bit of hope that you or your family member need to get on the right path.
The following are common barriers that you may run into when trying to seek help:
1.) Lack of access to mental health-it is difficult to find a therapist or psychiatrist that has availability in less than a month. But, if you know where to look, there ARE options.
2.) Stigma-a lot of times people view seeking mental health treatment as a weakness; where in fact this is a strength and trying to better yourself is the best investment you can make!
3.) Complex healthcare systems-navigating insurance coverage, knowing when, where, what or how to seek help can be discouraging. When is it time to get help? What options are out there for treatment? What is a good resource to search for a treatment just for me?
4.) Distrust in the mental health system-many people think doctors will just force medications on them, but this is not the case. At least it shouldn't be the case. Therapy is the first step, and it will be determined by you and your therapist together, if you would benefit from medications.
5.) Preference for self-help-trying to manage your own issues is a thing. but is not a replacement for professional mental health services. It can be hard to identify when it is time, but better to be proactive versus reactive!
6.) Financial barriers-many people lack health insurance and are not aware of how to obtain insurance or what their options are. Even with health insurance, many still pay out-of-pocket costs. You want to find options that won’t add more stress to your situation.
